Your 12 day private Portugal anniversary journey

A 12 day private Portugal anniversary journey gives you time for Lisbon’s neighborhoods, Sintra’s palaces, Coimbra’s university heritage and unhurried days beside the Douro. This mainland route pairs four comfortable overnight bases with private Mercedes-Benz travel and room for the moments you would rather not rush.

Your 12 day private Portugal anniversary journey: the route

This Portugal couples itinerary starts in Lisbon and finishes in Porto, avoiding a long return drive across the country. The 11-night arrangement is deliberately simple: four nights in Lisbon, one in Coimbra, three near Peso da Régua in the Douro Valley and three in Porto. Flying into Lisbon and home from Porto works particularly well.

Driving estimates below describe time on the road, not sightseeing, meals or queues. Traffic around Lisbon and Porto, mountain roads and your exact hotel location can change them.

    01Day 1: Arrive in Lisbon

Meet your English-speaking driver for a private Mercedes-Benz airport transfer to your hotel. Central Lisbon is usually around 20–40 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic. Keep the afternoon light: a riverside stroll around Praça do Comércio and an early dinner are enough after an overnight flight. Overnight: Lisbon. Tip: choose a hotel with straightforward vehicle access; some atmospheric old-town streets require a final walk with luggage.

02Day 2: Lisbon, from Belém to Alfama

Spend the morning in Belém, where the Jerónimos Monastery recalls the wealth and ambition of Portugal’s maritime expansion under King Manuel I. Return toward the center for lunch, then explore a manageable section of Alfama rather than tackling every hill. A Lisbon Fado evening is an optional anniversary outing at an established venue. Overnight: Lisbon. Tip: Alfama’s polished paving can be slippery, so bring shoes with reliable grip.

03Day 3: Sintra with one palace as the anchor

Allow roughly 40–60 minutes each way between Lisbon and Sintra, about 30 kilometers apart. Choose Pena Palace for its 19th-century Romantic architecture, or the National Palace of Sintra for royal interiors in the town center. One main palace, lunch and a short walk make a more enjoyable day than collecting entrances. Overnight: Lisbon. Tip: Pena involves uphill walking and controlled access; discuss mobility needs before choosing it, and arrange timed admission in advance.

04Day 4: Cascais and the Atlantic coast

Travel west to Cascais, roughly 30 kilometers from Lisbon and usually 35–50 minutes by road. Walk the waterfront, have a seafood lunch and, if conditions suit, continue to Guincho for Atlantic views. This is a coastal day, not a beach outing in Sintra town. Return to Lisbon with time to dress for dinner. Overnight: Lisbon. Tip: Guincho can be windy even on warm days; carry a light layer and leave swimming plans dependent on conditions.

05Day 5: Lisbon to Coimbra through Óbidos

Break the northbound journey with a morning in Óbidos, whose walled center rewards a short stroll before lunch. Continue to Coimbra for an afternoon arrival. The combined route is approximately 230 kilometers, with around three hours of driving before stops. Overnight: Coimbra. Tip: Óbidos’s ramparts have exposed sections and uneven footing; the lanes around Rua Direita offer a gentler alternative without walking the walls.

06Day 6: Coimbra’s university, then the Douro Valley

Visit the hilltop University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and permanently established in Coimbra in 1537. The Joanina Library is a highlight when admission is available. After lunch, drive toward Peso da Régua, allowing approximately 2½–3 hours for roughly 220 kilometers. Stay at the same Douro hotel for three nights. Tip: arrange the university visit early enough to avoid a late arrival on unfamiliar valley roads.

07Day 7: A slow day between Régua and Pinhão

Follow the N222 beside the river toward Pinhão, approximately 27 kilometers from Régua and around 40 minutes without stops. A visit to an established wine estate can introduce the Douro’s terraced vineyards and port production; estate visits and tastings are supplied by independent venues and require separate arrangements. Overnight: Douro Valley. Tip: inspect Pinhão railway station’s exterior tile panels depicting vineyard work before settling into a long lunch.

08Day 8: Your anniversary day in the Douro

Keep this day deliberately open. Choose a leisurely hotel breakfast, a scenic drive or a separately arranged winery lunch rather than another full sightseeing circuit. The Alto Douro Wine Region became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, but its appeal here is the time to notice the changing light on the terraces. Overnight: Douro Valley. Tip: hillside hotel access can add substantial driving time, so choose the anniversary restaurant after confirming your hotel location.

09Day 9: Douro Valley to Porto

Leave after breakfast and travel from the Régua area to Porto, roughly 120 kilometers and around 1¾–2 hours by road. Check in before a gentle introduction to Ribeira and the riverfront beneath the Dom Luís I Bridge, which opened in 1886. Overnight: Porto. Tip: Ribeira is atmospheric but steep approaches and cobbles matter; request a hotel recommendation that matches your walking comfort rather than choosing by river view alone.

10Day 10: Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia

Explore São Bento station’s azulejo panels and selected streets around the cathedral, then cross to Vila Nova de Gaia for an independently operated port lodge visit. Keep lunch and the afternoon flexible rather than scheduling several tastings. Overnight: Porto. Tip: the bridge’s upper and lower decks connect different elevations; agree on the walking route and pickup point with your driver-guide before setting off.

11Day 11: Choose Guimarães or another day in Porto

For a final excursion, Guimarães is approximately 55 kilometers from Porto, usually 45–60 minutes each way. Its medieval center, castle and Palace of the Dukes of Braganza make a coherent history-focused day. Alternatively, stay in Porto for galleries, shopping and a relaxed anniversary dinner. Overnight: Porto. Tip: in Guimarães, build lunch around Largo da Oliveira, then decide whether you want another interior visit or simply time in the old streets.

    12Day 12: Depart from Porto

Finish with door-to-door private Mercedes-Benz transportation to Porto Airport, generally 20–40 minutes from central hotels, depending on traffic. Avoid adding a distant sightseeing stop before an international departure. Tip: tell your driver about luggage volume and any airport assistance needs when planning the transfer so the vehicle and pickup timing can be considered properly.

If your anniversary falls on a different day, the overnight sequence can be adjusted around it. Request a personalized proposal with your dates, preferred hotel style and ideal balance of sightseeing and downtime.

How your Portugal Ambassador supports the journey

How your Portugal Ambassador supports the journey

Your Portugal Ambassador is a knowledgeable local English-speaking driver-guide from Portugal. The role combines safe, practical door-to-door travel with local context: explaining how Lisbon developed after the 1755 earthquake, helping you understand the Douro’s landscape, or suggesting where a short stop will add something meaningful to the day.

Portugal Magik provides private Mercedes-Benz transfers and private day or multi-day tours with an English-speaking driver. A Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a comfortable option for couples and smaller groups carrying luggage on this journey, subject to availability. The appropriate vehicle depends on your party size, luggage and arrangements; not every journey uses the same model.

Door-to-door travel removes repeated packing logistics, parking decisions and the need to navigate unfamiliar roads. In pedestrianized centers or streets with access restrictions, your Ambassador uses the closest practical permitted pickup or drop-off point. Flexible stops might mean coffee before leaving Óbidos, a viewpoint when the Douro weather clears, or a shorter walking route in Porto. Flexibility still needs to respect driving distances, opening hours and timed admissions.

Your Ambassador can offer curated suggestions for restaurants, wine estates and other independently operated experiences, along with hotel recommendations suited to your preferences. Portugal Magik does not own the hotels or operate those third-party activities, and suggestions do not guarantee availability. Entrance visits may also involve venue staff or a separately arranged specialist guide; driver-guide service should not be confused with guaranteed guided access inside every monument.

Established in 2012, Portugal Magik has 1,300+ verified reviews, is consistently five-star rated and holds TripAdvisor Hall of Fame recognition. Share what would make the anniversary feel personal—an important date, an interest in architecture, or simply fewer early starts—and request a personalized proposal built around those priorities.

Who this route suits, when to go and how to tailor it

This route suits couples who want cultural depth without changing hotels every night. It works especially well for a first mainland Portugal visit, combining major landmarks with three nights in the Douro to slow the pace. Travelers who enjoy wine, historic neighborhoods and long lunches will find plenty of variety; those with limited mobility should discuss hotel access, cobbles, slopes and palace visits before finalizing the plan.

May, June, September and early October are often rewarding months for this Portugal couples itinerary. Expect popular sights to remain busy, particularly in Sintra. July and August can bring considerable inland heat, so Coimbra and Douro sightseeing is better concentrated in the morning. September may coincide with Douro harvest activity, although its timing varies and participation should never be assumed. Winter offers quieter days but shorter daylight, wetter weather and some seasonal closures.

For an eight-day version, retain Lisbon, the Douro and Porto, removing the Coimbra overnight and optional excursion days rather than squeezing twelve days of sightseeing into eight. A direct Lisbon–Douro transfer then becomes the longest road day: allow roughly 4–4½ hours before breaks, depending on the hotel.

For 14 or 15 days, add two nights in Évora after Lisbon and before Coimbra, with an optional extra night in Lisbon or Porto. Lisbon–Évora is roughly 135 kilometers and 1½–2 hours; Évora–Coimbra is approximately 300 kilometers and around three hours before stops. Évora adds Roman heritage, whitewashed streets and Alentejo food such as açorda alentejana without taking the route off the mainland.

An extension into Spain is possible, but it deserves its own pacing rather than being attached as a rushed detour. For this anniversary journey, spending the full twelve days in Portugal usually produces a more restful experience.

Request a personalized proposal if you would like fewer monuments, more coastal time around Cascais, accessible hotel recommendations or an anniversary date anchored in Lisbon, the Douro or Porto.
