A private transfer from Lisbon to Peso da Régua for two

A private transfer from Lisbon to Peso da Régua connects the capital with the Douro’s riverside wine country at your own pace. Travel straight to your hotel, pause in historic towns along the way, or turn the journey into a leisurely three-day escape.

Your private transfer from Lisbon to Peso da Régua

Peso da Régua offers something particularly appealing to couples travelling slowly: a working wine town where the river, surrounding vineyards and local history belong to the same story. The Douro Museum introduces the landscape and wine culture of the Douro Demarcated Region, established in 1756. Often treated as the start of the Douro wine route, Régua is a practical base for exploring the valley rather than simply a place to pass through.

For the simplest arrival, choose a direct door-to-door transfer from your Lisbon hotel, Lisbon Airport or another agreed address to your accommodation in Peso da Régua. Allow approximately 370–390 km and around 4–4½ hours of driving, depending on the exact addresses, road conditions and traffic. Comfort breaks add time, and an estate outside the town may require a further drive along slower local roads.

Your Portugal Ambassador is a knowledgeable local English-speaking driver-guide from Portugal, providing context along the way without making every mile a guided commentary. Portugal Magik offers private Mercedes-Benz vehicles, luggage help and flexible stops. For a couple who appreciates extra room, a Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a comfortable option, subject to availability; the appropriate vehicle depends on your luggage and travel needs.

A direct journey leaves you time to settle in before a gentle riverside walk. If the Douro Museum is on your arrival-day wish list, check its opening hours before deciding when to leave Lisbon. Established in 2012, Portugal Magik brings experience in private transfers and tailored touring to this longer cross-country journey.

Three unhurried days through Coimbra and Lamego

Three unhurried days through Coimbra and Lamego

For couples who prefer a journey with room to linger, three days gives Fátima, Coimbra and Lamego their own space. Overnighting in Coimbra and Lamego avoids unnecessary backtracking and keeps the final approach to the Douro short. Accommodation and any attraction visits should be planned around your interests and the relevant opening hours.

01Day one: Lisbon, Fátima and an evening in Coimbra

Travel roughly 130 km from Lisbon to Fátima, allowing around 1½ hours on the road. Spend 60–90 minutes at the Sanctuary of Fátima, including the Chapel of the Apparitions and the main sanctuary grounds, before lunch. Continue approximately 85 km to Coimbra, usually about an hour, and stay overnight there. Leave the evening for a gentle walk through the lower town rather than another scheduled visit. Insider tip: check the sanctuary’s religious calendar; pilgrimage dates, particularly around 13 May and 13 October, can substantially change the atmosphere and journey timing.

02Day two: Coimbra’s university quarter, then Lamego

Give Coimbra the morning, with two to three hours for its hilltop university area and historic streets. The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290, and its Alta and Sofia ensemble is UNESCO-listed. After lunch, continue towards Lamego via the Viseu corridor, approximately 150 km and around two hours of driving, depending on traffic and roadworks. Stay overnight in Lamego, leaving time for a first stroll around its cathedral and central avenues. Insider tip: if the Joanina Library matters to you, arrange the appropriate timed admission in advance rather than assuming you can enter during a casual university walk.

03Day three: Lamego’s sanctuary and the descent to Régua

Spend a relaxed morning at the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, whose monumental staircase rises above Lamego. Allow 60–90 minutes, longer if you want to explore the town before lunch. Peso da Régua is only about 15–20 km away by road, typically a 25–30-minute drive, so there is no need to rush the final leg. Once in Régua, allow around 60–90 minutes for the Douro Museum if it is open. Insider tip: ask to approach the sanctuary by road if you would rather enjoy the upper terraces without climbing the full staircase.

A two-day version can use Coimbra as the overnight stop, while a fourth day allows more time around Régua and the Douro on a private driving tour. Tell us how much walking, museum time and downtime you enjoy, and request a personalized proposal shaped around your pace.

Fátima, Coimbra and Lamego in one scenic travel day

All three places can be included between Lisbon and Peso da Régua, but this becomes a full travel day rather than a quick transfer. Allow approximately 8–9 hours overall, including around 4½–5 hours of driving and local access, the visits below, lunch and short breaks. Religious events, traffic or longer attraction visits can extend that estimate. For a slower rhythm, choose two stops instead of trying to do everything.

01Fátima: 45–60 minutes at the sanctuary

Around 130 km north of Lisbon, Fátima is the first natural pause. Concentrate on the Chapel of the Apparitions and the open sanctuary grounds; this is enough for an introductory visit, not a comprehensive religious itinerary. Insider tip: on busy pilgrimage days, allow extra time for access and walking, or make Coimbra and Lamego your two stops instead.

02Coimbra: 75–90 minutes for one part of the city

Approximately 85 km beyond Fátima, Coimbra rewards a focused visit. Choose either the university quarter for its historic setting and elevated views or the lower town for a gentler stroll and a café pause. Lunch needs a separate allowance of around 45–60 minutes. Insider tip: Coimbra’s steep lanes make footwear important; a short stop is more enjoyable when you choose one area rather than trying to cover both the riverfront and the hilltop.

03Lamego: 45–60 minutes before the Douro

Roughly 150 km from Coimbra, Lamego is the final sightseeing stop before Régua. Use the time for the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios or a walk around the cathedral and town centre, rather than squeezing in both. Insider tip: a road approach to the sanctuary suits couples saving their energy for the Douro; the full staircase is best treated as a deliberate walking visit, not an incidental transfer stop.

From Lamego, allow another 25–30 minutes to reach central Peso da Régua. Your Portugal Ambassador can adapt comfort stops and the balance of sightseeing to the day’s conditions, while keeping the onward journey and your accommodation’s location in view.
