A private transfer from Lisbon to Badajoz and Mérida

A private transfer from Lisbon to Badajoz and Mérida connects the Alentejo’s historic towns with an imposing Moorish citadel and some of Spain’s finest Roman remains. For couples who prefer time together over a crowded schedule, travel directly, pause along the way or spread the journey across three days.

Your private transfer from Lisbon to Badajoz and Mérida

Badajoz and Mérida offer two distinct encounters with Extremadura: the Badajoz Alcazaba rises above the Guadiana River, while Mérida’s Roman theatre and bridge reveal the scale of ancient Augusta Emerita, founded in 25 BC. These are places to explore slowly, with time for a shaded square between monuments rather than another hurried photograph.

For a direct door-to-door journey, allow approximately 225–235 km and 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes from central Lisbon to Badajoz. Mérida is roughly 290–300 km from Lisbon, usually around 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes without sightseeing. The usual route follows Portugal’s A2 and A6, then Spain’s A-5. Traffic, your precise pickup address and comfort breaks affect the total.

Badajoz can be your final destination, or a planned visit before continuing approximately 65 km east to Mérida. A visit to its historic centre adds sightseeing and access time; it is not included in the direct driving estimate. Spain’s mainland clocks are one hour ahead of Portugal’s, so allow for that when reading your arrival time.

Portugal Magik provides private Mercedes-Benz vehicles, door-to-door pickup and luggage help, accompanied by your Portugal Ambassador: a knowledgeable local English-speaking driver-guide from Portugal. A private Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a comfortable option for couples wanting extra room, subject to availability. Flexible stops allow for a coffee, a rest break or a change of pace.

Three unhurried days through Évora and Elvas to Mérida

Three unhurried days through Évora and Elvas to Mérida

For couples travelling slowly, three days allow the Portuguese stops to become part of the holiday rather than brief interruptions. Overnight in Évora and Elvas, then finish in Mérida after visiting Badajoz. Hotel stays and monument visits can be considered when shaping the itinerary; the service is your private transport and driver-guided journey.

    01Day 1: Lisbon to Évora

Travel approximately 130–140 km, allowing around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes of driving. Spend the afternoon exploring Évora’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, including the Roman Temple and the streets around Praça do Giraldo. Overnight in Évora. Tip: leave the car-based schedule behind for a while here; the temple, cathedral and central square are best connected by an unhurried walk, with comfortable shoes for the uneven paving.

    02Day 2: Évora to Elvas

Continue approximately 85 km, generally around an hour’s drive, and devote the afternoon to Elvas, whose garrison town and fortifications received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2012. See the Amoreira Aqueduct and explore the fortified historic centre. Overnight in Elvas. Tip: if you want to visit Forte da Graça, plan a separate driving stop and check opening hours; it stands outside the centre and should not be treated as a quick addition to a town walk.

03Day 3: Elvas, Badajoz and Mérida

Badajoz is approximately 20–25 km from Elvas; Mérida lies another 65 km farther east. Allow around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes of driving across the day, plus visits. Spend the morning around the Badajoz Alcazaba and Plaza Alta, then continue to Mérida for its Roman theatre and the long Roman bridge over the Guadiana. Finish at your Mérida accommodation. Tip: keep the theatre visit and riverside walk as separate appointments in your day; the bridge is not beside the theatre, and summer afternoons can be very hot.

For a four-day version, add a second night in Évora and give its historic centre a full day before continuing. Tell us which places deserve the most time for you, and request a personalized proposal built around those priorities.

Évora, Elvas and Badajoz pauses before a Mérida arrival

A sightseeing transfer can include the following three stops before dropping you at your Mérida address. Allow roughly 9–10 hours overall with all three, including approximately 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 15 minutes of driving, lunch and practical access time. For a gentler day, choose two stops and reach Mérida earlier; save its major Roman monuments for the following morning.

01Évora: Roman Temple and Praça do Giraldo

Allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours for a compact walk through the historic centre, taking in the Roman Temple and the streets leading towards Praça do Giraldo. This is an introduction, not enough time for every major interior. Tip: choose either a longer café pause or an additional monument visit rather than squeezing both into the shorter stop.

02Elvas: Amoreira Aqueduct and the fortified centre

Allow 1–1 hour 15 minutes for an aqueduct viewpoint and a short exploration of the old town. The remarkable aqueduct supplied this strategically important border town, whose defensive landscape is a major reason to stop. Tip: arrange the aqueduct pause separately from the central walk; trying to cover both entirely on foot uses much of a short visit.

    03Badajoz: Alcazaba and Plaza Alta

Allow 1–1 hour 15 minutes for the Alcazaba area and nearby Plaza Alta, known for its striking patterned façades. Much of the surviving citadel reflects Almohad construction in the 12th century. Tip: wear shoes with good grip for slopes and uneven surfaces, and treat any museum visit as extra time rather than assuming it fits into this short stop.

Lunch needs its own allowance of around 45–60 minutes. Monument interiors depend on opening hours, and summer heat may make a shorter walk preferable. Your Portugal Ambassador can adapt the sequence and comfort breaks, while keeping your final arrival realistic.
