A guide to choosing regions for a 14 day Portugal tour

The key to choosing regions for a 14 day Portugal tour is deciding what deserves an overnight stay—and what works better as a stop along the way. This mainland route connects Lisbon, the Alentejo, Coimbra, the Douro Valley and Porto without turning every morning into another departure.

Practical pacing: choosing regions for a 14 day Portugal tour

For a first visit focused on history, food, wine and contrasting landscapes, start in Lisbon and finish in Porto. Allow 14 calendar days and 13 nights: four nights in Lisbon, two in Évora, one in Coimbra, three in the Douro Valley and three in Porto. This gives you five overnight bases, with Sintra visited from Lisbon rather than requiring another hotel change.

The Algarve is deliberately left out. Including both the southern coast and the Douro is physically possible, but it introduces a substantial north–south journey and takes time away from the places you came to enjoy. Portugal itinerary planning works best when you choose a coherent route rather than collect regions.

Driving estimates below are approximate time on the road, excluding sightseeing, meals and traffic delays. Rural hotel locations can materially change Douro journey times.

01Days 1–4: Lisbon and Sintra, four nights in Lisbon

Keep arrival day light: settle into your hotel, then explore a manageable stretch of Baixa or the riverfront. Spend day two in Belém, where the Jerónimos Monastery reflects the wealth and ambition of Portugal’s early-16th-century maritime expansion. Reserve day three for Sintra, approximately 30 km from central Lisbon and usually 40–60 minutes away before local access restrictions and traffic. Choose one major palace visit, with a second monument only if your energy and entry times allow. Day four belongs to Lisbon: Alfama, the tile collections and viewpoints, or a slower lunch followed by Chiado. Insider tip: Sintra’s monuments sit on steep, winding roads; a private vehicle does not remove restricted-access areas or the walking required inside palace grounds.

02Days 5–6: Évora and the Alentejo, two nights in Évora

Lisbon to Évora is approximately 135 km, normally 1.5–2 hours of driving. Arrive with enough afternoon left for the Roman Temple, cathedral area and compact historic center, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1986. On day six, choose either a restful Évora day or an excursion to Monsaraz, around 55 km and roughly one hour each way. Its hilltop streets overlook the Alqueva reservoir, offering a very different landscape from Lisbon. Look for regional dishes such as açorda alentejana, traditionally made with bread, garlic, coriander and olive oil. Insider tip: in warm weather, explore Monsaraz early and leave the exposed viewpoints before the strongest afternoon heat.

03Day 7: Central Portugal, one night in Coimbra

This is the route’s most demanding transfer day. Travel north from Évora to Coimbra, with Tomar as an optional substantial stop rather than a quick photograph. Allow approximately 280–310 km and 3.5–4 hours of driving if including Tomar, plus lunch and at least two hours for the Convent of Christ, whose history connects the Knights Templar with the later Order of Christ. If a gentler day matters more, continue directly to Coimbra and save your attention for the university quarter. Insider tip: avoid pairing a full Tomar visit with a fixed late-afternoon Coimbra monument entry; the one-night stop works best when the evening remains unhurried.

04Days 8–10: Douro Valley, three nights near Pinhão or Peso da Régua

Use the morning of day eight for Coimbra’s university area, with any timed interior visit planned in advance. Continue to the Douro: Coimbra to Pinhão is roughly 200–220 km and about three hours of driving, depending on the route. Add Lamego only if you leave Coimbra early enough for a meaningful stop. Spend day nine around Pinhão, with time to see the station’s vineyard-themed tile panels and consider a tasting at an independently operated wine estate. Keep day ten flexible for viewpoints, another part of the valley or simply enjoying your hotel setting. Insider tip: a beautiful hillside property can be 20–40 minutes from the river road; choose your exact hotel location before fixing daily plans.

05Days 11–13: Porto, three nights in Porto

Travel from Pinhão to Porto, allowing roughly 125–145 km and 2–2.5 hours of driving, depending on the route and hotel addresses. Amarante makes a useful optional pause beside the Tâmega River rather than another overnight base. Dedicate day twelve to Porto’s historic center, including São Bento station and Ribeira, then cross to Vila Nova de Gaia for a different perspective on the city and its port-wine trade. On day thirteen, choose between another Porto day and an excursion to Guimarães, approximately 55 km and around one hour each way. Insider tip: do not schedule Guimarães automatically; travelers who enjoy markets, architecture and long lunches often value a second full Porto day more.

    06Day 14: Departure from Porto

Leave directly from your Porto hotel for the airport, typically around 15–20 km from central accommodation and approximately 25–40 minutes by road in normal conditions. Keep the morning free of essential sightseeing, especially with an early or midday flight. Finishing in Porto avoids spending much of the final day returning to Lisbon, a journey of roughly 315 km and around 3–3.5 hours before stops or congestion. Insider tip: compare flights into Lisbon and out of Porto before settling the route; the departure airport can determine whether your final night feels relaxed or logistical.

How a Portugal Ambassador supports the journey

How a Portugal Ambassador supports the journey

A Portugal Ambassador is a knowledgeable local English-speaking driver-guide from Portugal. On a private multi-day tour, that local perspective helps connect the regions: why Évora’s landscape differs from the Douro, how Coimbra’s university shaped the city, or why Porto’s wine lodges stand across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Portugal Magik provides private Mercedes-Benz transportation, door-to-door pickup and flexible itineraries. For smaller groups, a private Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a comfortable option for the longer Évora–Coimbra and Coimbra–Douro journeys, subject to availability and the group’s passenger and luggage requirements. The vehicle choice should suit the travelers rather than be assumed in advance.

Door-to-door travel makes hotel changes more straightforward, although pedestrian streets and restricted historic centers sometimes require using the nearest permitted vehicle access point. Flexible stops can mean a coffee break in Amarante, a viewpoint in the Douro or a longer lunch when the day allows. Flexibility still needs to respect realistic driving time, monument opening hours and any independently arranged timed entries.

Your Portugal Ambassador can offer curated experience suggestions and hotel recommendations based on the route. In Lisbon, that might mean weighing the convenience of Baixa against the gradients of Alfama; in the Douro, it means balancing vineyard views against access to Pinhão or Régua. Hotels, wine estates, restaurants and other third-party experiences remain independently owned and operated. Recommendations do not imply guaranteed availability, and driver-guide support should not be confused with specialist guided access inside every monument.

Who this route suits, when to go and what to change

This route suits first-time visitors who want a broad mainland introduction without changing hotels every night. It works particularly well for couples, friends and multigenerational families interested in historic cities, regional cooking and wine country. Travelers with limited mobility should flag that early: Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto have steep streets, while Sintra’s palace grounds and Monsaraz’s cobbles can be demanding. Private transportation reduces transfer effort but cannot remove those physical conditions.

May, June, September and October are strong months for this combination of regions, though weather is never guaranteed. Évora and the inland Douro can become very hot in July and August; early starts and quieter afternoons are sensible. September may overlap with the Douro grape harvest, but harvest dates vary by estate and season, and production work can limit visitor access. Winter favors a more city-led journey, with shorter daylight hours and a greater likelihood of rain in the north.

For eight days and seven nights, simplify to three nights in Lisbon, one in Coimbra and three in Porto. For ten days and nine nights, add two nights in the Douro. These shorter versions leave out Évora rather than retain every region with rushed single-night stays. At the other end, a 15-day journey can add a fourth Douro night or another Lisbon night to the main route, creating breathing space without introducing another hotel.

If the coast is the priority, replace the northern half with the Algarve rather than attach it to Porto. A southern version could use Lisbon, Évora, Lagos and Tavira, departing from Faro. Sintra town itself is not a beach destination; for an Atlantic coastal stop while based in Lisbon, consider Cascais, approximately 30 km west of the capital, instead of adding another inland monument visit.

Tell Portugal Magik whether you would rather trade a palace for a coastal afternoon, a wine visit for more city time, or a hotel change for a quieter day. A personalized proposal can turn those preferences into a route that feels like your holiday rather than a checklist.
