A 12 day Portugal cities wine and coast journey connects Lisbon’s neighborhoods, Alentejo vineyards, the Douro Valley, Porto and the Atlantic shore. This mainland route uses five overnight bases, with private door-to-door travel and enough breathing room to enjoy the places between them.
This itinerary begins and ends at Lisbon Airport, with 12 travel days and 11 nights: three in Lisbon, two in Évora, two in the Douro Valley, two in Porto and two in Cascais. It works best with a reasonably early arrival on day one; a late arrival simply makes the first evening a settling-in period.
Driving times below are approximate time on the road, excluding sightseeing, meals and comfort stops. City traffic and winding vineyard roads can add time. The longest transfer is deliberately identified rather than disguised as a sightseeing day.
Meet your driver for a private transfer to your hotel; allow roughly 30–60 minutes from Lisbon Airport to central neighborhoods, depending on traffic. Keep the afternoon modest: Praça do Comércio and the level streets of Baixa offer an introduction to the city rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Insider tip: save steep Alfama lanes for a rested morning. Overnight in Lisbon.
Explore Belém, around 7 km west of Baixa, with time for the Jerónimos Monastery, whose construction began in 1501 under Manuel I. Allow a relaxed half-day rather than squeezing monuments between transfers. Pastéis de Belém has made its namesake custard pastries since 1837. Insider tip: check monastery admission and closure arrangements before choosing the day; do not assume an exterior visit includes access inside. Overnight in Lisbon.
Give Lisbon a day without intercity driving. Pair Alfama’s older street pattern with Chiado’s shops and cafés, using short vehicle transfers where practical and walking where narrow lanes require it. Try bacalhau à Brás, made with shredded salt cod, thin potatoes and eggs. Insider tip: choose one hilltop viewpoint, such as São Pedro de Alcântara, rather than spending the day climbing between several. Overnight in Lisbon.
Travel approximately 135 km into the Alentejo, allowing 1½–2 hours of driving. Évora’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a Roman temple dating to the first century AD and a cathedral begun in the late twelfth century. Leave the afternoon for a compact walk and a slow meal. Insider tip: the temple is especially rewarding in late-afternoon light, after the strongest heat. Overnight in Évora.
Arrange one winery visit near Évora, such as a visit offered by Cartuxa, subject to the producer’s schedule. For a fuller countryside day, Monsaraz is around 55 km away, generally about an hour each way; otherwise, remain near Évora and protect the afternoon for rest. Insider tip: book the tasting before fixing lunch, and avoid combining multiple wineries with Monsaraz. Overnight in Évora.
This is the journey’s substantial travel day: allow approximately 5–6 hours of driving to a hotel around Pinhão, with additional time for lunch and comfort stops. Leave after breakfast and make arrival, rather than another attraction, the priority. The Douro became a demarcated wine region in 1756. Insider tip: choose a hotel in or close to Pinhão if minimizing narrow-road driving matters more than a remote vineyard setting. Overnight in the Douro.
Build the day around one prearranged producer visit, perhaps at Quinta do Bomfim in Pinhão, with an optional second tasting only if wine is a central interest. Compare Douro table wines with port rather than assuming every tasting covers both. Pinhão railway station’s tile panels depict vineyard life. Insider tip: seemingly short journeys between hillside estates can be slow; cluster visits geographically and leave room for lunch. Overnight in the Douro.
Allow around two hours for the roughly 125 km journey from Pinhão to Porto, depending on your hotel and route. After checking in, explore Ribeira and views of the Dom Luís I Bridge, inaugurated in 1886. Keep any substantial port-lodge visit for tomorrow. Insider tip: central Porto’s steep streets make a hotel’s exact entrance and vehicle access more important than its straight-line distance from the river. Overnight in Porto.
Spend the morning around São Bento station and Porto’s historic center, then cross to Vila Nova de Gaia for an independently operated port-lodge visit, such as one offered by Graham’s or Taylor’s. Each producer has its own admission and tasting arrangements. Insider tip: several lodges sit uphill from Gaia’s waterfront; arrange the vehicle drop-off around the selected entrance rather than assuming an easy riverside walk. Overnight in Porto.
Allow about 2½ hours from Porto to Nazaré, then roughly 1¾–2 hours onward to Cascais, before stops. Break the journey with a seafood lunch and a view from Sítio over Nazaré’s town beach. The giant-wave reputation belongs chiefly to Praia do Norte, and conditions are seasonal and unpredictable. Insider tip: choose either a leisurely waterfront lunch or extended viewpoint time so the stop does not consume the whole afternoon. Overnight in Cascais.
Enjoy a low-mileage day around Cascais, with its harbor, town beaches and the coastal road toward Guincho, about 10 km away. Guincho is exposed to Atlantic wind and surf; it is not interchangeable with Cascais’s more sheltered town beaches. Insider tip: choose the beach after checking the day’s conditions and warning flags, and treat coastal walking as a worthwhile alternative to swimming. Overnight in Cascais.
Finish with a private airport transfer, approximately 35 km and usually 35–60 minutes of driving, with extra margin at busy times. A later flight may allow breakfast and a short seafront walk, but airport timing comes first. Insider tip: share your flight time when requesting the itinerary so the final hotel and departure schedule are planned together.

Your Portugal Ambassador is a knowledgeable local English-speaking driver-guide from Portugal. On a journey covering both major cities and rural wine country, that means practical local context as well as private Mercedes-Benz transportation: understanding where a comfortable stop fits, which viewpoints require walking and when a scenic detour would make the day too long.
Portugal Magik provides private transfers and private day or multi-day tours, with door-to-door pickup and flexible itineraries. Where historic centers restrict vehicle access, your driver uses the nearest permitted, practical meeting point. A private Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a comfortable option for smaller groups on this route, subject to availability and the number of passengers and bags.
Flexibility has useful limits. You can shorten a viewpoint stop, linger over lunch or skip an optional detour, but a winery’s reserved visiting time still matters. Your Portugal Ambassador can suggest suitable producers, restaurants and cultural visits; wineries, monuments and other third-party experiences operate independently and determine their own availability. Portugal Magik does not operate those activities or guarantee admission.
Hotel recommendations should follow your travel style rather than a fixed roster. Options to discuss include Memmo Príncipe Real in Lisbon, Convento do Espinheiro outside Évora, The Vintage House in Pinhão, Torel Avantgarde in Porto and Grande Real Villa Itália in Cascais. These are independent hotels, not Portugal Magik properties. Central access, steps, parking arrangements, room outlook and the distance to dinner all deserve consideration alongside hotel category.

This route suits couples, friends and multigenerational groups who want cities and wine country without changing hotels every night. It is particularly rewarding for travelers who enjoy one substantial visit followed by time for lunch, wandering or rest. Families can reduce tastings and expand the Cascais stay; travelers with limited mobility should flag this early because Lisbon, Porto, Évora and vineyard properties can involve slopes, cobbles or steps.
May–June and September–October generally offer a good balance for city visits and vineyard scenery, although heat, rain and crowds vary. September can coincide with harvest activity in the Douro and Alentejo, but dates depend on the year and producer, and access to working areas is not assured. July and August favor a longer coastal finish, while inland heat calls for earlier sightseeing and quieter afternoons. Atlantic swimming remains weather-dependent, and the water can feel cool even in summer.
From November to March, emphasize museums, food and wine rather than beach time. The Douro can be rainy, and rural opening schedules require closer checking. Nazaré’s large winter swells are a possibility to observe from safe designated viewpoints, not an event that can be promised for a particular date.
For an eight-day version, avoid compressing all five bases: use Lisbon, the Douro and Porto, with a coastal stop at Foz do Douro or Matosinhos. That version works best with arrival in Lisbon and departure from Porto. For ten days, omit Évora while keeping the Douro and a Cascais finish. With 14–15 days, add Coimbra between Évora and the Douro to break the longest transfer, and extend the coast rather than filling every extra day with driving.
Sintra can replace part of the Cascais leisure day if palaces matter more than beach time. Allow roughly 25–35 minutes of driving from Cascais to Sintra, plus additional time for local access arrangements and timed monument admission. Sintra town is inland; any beach component belongs on the coast, for example at Praia Grande, and requires a separate transfer.
