A 10-day private road trip through Portugal with driver connects Lisbon, Sintra, medieval towns, Porto and the Douro Valley without making every day a long transfer. Portugal Magik curates the route around your interests, with a knowledgeable English-speaking driver and, for smaller groups, a comfortable private black Mercedes-Benz V-Class, subject to availability.
This Lisbon-to-Lisbon route balances major monuments with smaller towns and a night among the Douro’s terraced vineyards. Two nights in Porto provide a useful pause halfway through, while most days involve less than three hours of driving.
Driving times below are approximate daily totals, excluding sightseeing breaks; congestion, accommodation locations and mountain-road conditions can add time. Monument visits depend on opening schedules and ticket availability. Contact Portugal Magik to adjust this starting point around your arrival time, walking preferences and must-see places.
Visit the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Praça do Comércio and Alfama’s lanes; allow around 1–1.5 hours of driving between districts; overnight Lisbon. Tip: explore Alfama before your legs tire—the cobbles and gradients make it more demanding than the flat riverfront.
Visit the Park and National Palace of Pena and Sintra’s historic center, including the National Palace of Sintra with its twin conical chimneys; allow around 1.5–2 hours of driving, subject to local access restrictions; overnight Sintra. Tip: anchor the day around your timed Pena Palace admission and leave a generous margin for the uphill approach.
Walk through Óbidos’s Porta da Vila into its walled center, then continue to Nazaré’s beachfront and the Sítio viewpoint above the town; allow around 2–2.5 hours of driving; overnight Nazaré. Tip: enjoy Óbidos from street level if narrow, exposed wall walks do not appeal—there is plenty to see without climbing the ramparts.
Visit Batalha Monastery, founded in 1386, before continuing to Coimbra’s old center and Santa Cruz Monastery; allow around 1.75–2.25 hours of driving; overnight Coimbra. Tip: make time for Batalha’s Unfinished Chapels rather than treating the monastery as a quick church stop.
Explore the University of Coimbra’s historic complex, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2013, then stop beside Aveiro’s central canal before continuing to Porto; allow around 1.75–2.25 hours of driving; overnight Porto. Tip: secure any required Joanina Library timed admission before fixing the day’s departure from Coimbra.
See São Bento station’s tile panels, Porto Cathedral, Ribeira and the riverfront at Vila Nova de Gaia; allow around 45–90 minutes of driving between sightseeing areas; overnight Porto. Tip: plan the central walking section downhill from the cathedral toward Ribeira, with your driver arranging the next practical pickup point.
Stop in Amarante for the São Gonçalo bridge and church, then continue into the Douro Valley to Pinhão’s tiled railway station and riverside; allow around 2.5–3 hours of driving; overnight Pinhão. Tip: reserve daylight for the final approach through the vineyards rather than arriving after sunset.
Follow the N222 toward Peso da Régua, visit Lamego’s Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, then explore Viseu Cathedral and the surrounding historic streets; allow around 2–2.5 hours of driving; overnight Viseu. Tip: ask your driver about approaching the sanctuary from the upper access road if you prefer to avoid climbing its monumental staircase.
Travel to Tomar for the Convent of Christ, whose origins lie in the Knights Templar’s 12th-century stronghold, followed by Praça da República and the Nabão riverfront; allow around 2.25–2.75 hours of driving; overnight Tomar. Tip: allow a substantial afternoon visit for the convent’s cloisters and Manueline window, not just the celebrated round church.
Stop in Santarém to visit the Jardim das Portas do Sol viewpoint above the Tagus plain before returning to Lisbon; allow around 2–2.5 hours of driving; overnight Lisbon. Tip: keep this final stop optional if you have a flight that day, and build the journey around the required airport arrival time.

Plan a personalized journey →
Portugal Magik provides a curated, fully personalized private tour with an English-speaking driver, sightseeing along the agreed itinerary and all transportation between its stops. Door-to-door pickups connect your accommodation, sightseeing areas and final destination wherever vehicle access permits; airport transfers can also be incorporated into the agreed route.
For couples, families and smaller groups, a private black Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a comfortable option for these multi-day journeys, subject to availability. Vehicle suitability should be confirmed against your passenger numbers and luggage rather than assumed. Share those details with Portugal Magik when requesting your itinerary.
Your driver assists with luggage, suggests sensible departure times and shares local knowledge along the way. Flexible stops allow for a longer lunch, a shorter walking visit or a photograph of the Douro terraces where stopping is safe and permitted. In historic centers with restricted vehicle access, your driver identifies a practical drop-off and pickup location.
This support is particularly valuable in Sintra, where timed admissions and restricted roads affect the day, and in Porto, where a poorly planned walking route can mean repeated steep climbs. Driver assistance and local commentary should not be confused with specialist guided visits inside monuments. Confirm admission arrangements, meals and accommodation separately in your proposal; sightseeing on the itinerary does not by itself mean every entrance ticket is included.
The route suits first-time visitors who want a broad introduction to Portugal, returning travelers interested in the center and north, and families who prefer having one coordinated transport plan. It can also suit travelers seeking less walking, provided the itinerary is adapted: Alfama, Sintra, Coimbra and Porto all have slopes or uneven surfaces. Ask Portugal Magik to shape the sightseeing around your actual comfort level rather than a standard checklist.
May, June, September and early October usually offer a good balance of daylight and comfortable sightseeing conditions, although neither sunshine nor mild temperatures are guaranteed. July and August bring greater pressure on popular sights, and the Douro can be very hot. In winter, shorter days and wetter weather in the north favor earlier starts, fewer outdoor stops and more flexibility.
September can coincide with the Douro grape harvest, but its timing varies by vineyard and year. Treat it as seasonal context rather than a promised experience. Nazaré’s exceptionally large waves are also weather-dependent; this itinerary includes its coast and viewpoints, not a guaranteed wave spectacle.
Ten days allow this route to remain varied without relying on long daily drives, but there are still several changes of overnight base. For a slower version, remove Viseu and Santarém, add a second night in the Douro, and discuss a more direct return to Lisbon. Alternatively, finish in Porto and redesign the order to avoid the southbound return.
A multi-day private chauffeured road trip itinerary through Portugal can be tailored to 5–10 days. For five days, focus on Lisbon, Sintra, Óbidos and Coimbra rather than compressing the entire route. With seven days, continue to Porto and finish there. To extend beyond ten days, add nights in Lisbon, Porto or the Douro before considering a separate detour to Évora and the Alentejo.
Send Portugal Magik your dates, arrival and departure points, group size and two or three priorities. Request a personalized itinerary with realistic sightseeing windows, suitable overnight towns and private Mercedes-Benz transportation matched to your journey.
